It isn't revealed until later in the franchise but Kyle Katarn's father was sympathetic to both the Jedi and Rebel cause. Morgan Katarn was a Force-sensitive human and leader of the Rebel Alliance. While never an active Jedi, Morgan would become the keeper of great Jedi knowledge after the Imperial purge. Morgan would be captured and murdered by Imperial Inquisitors. Eventually Kyle would learn about the knowledge his father was protecting for the Jedi and eventually head down the path to Knighthood.

Jyn Erso's past is still a bit checkered prior to the events of Rogue One. The forthcoming novel Catalyst focuses on the events of her father during the Clone Wars. Based on the official description of the novel, it appears that Jyn's father, Galen Erso, is a brilliant scientist caught in the middle of the conflict between the Republic and Separatists armies during the Clone Wars.

Catalyst will be essential reading prior to the release of Rogue One as it will expose a deeper sense of family and motive for the events of the film.

Even though the Skywalker lineage appears to be sitting this one out, common family elements will once again prove to be a strong bond. While very little is known about Jyn and her relationship with her family, the events surrounding Kyle Katarn's past prove to be a strong driving force for his mission and greater development as a character.

Family has, and will continue to be, the greater theme for all Star Wars films now and moving forward.
