The final entry in this list is not a happy one and just goes to show that chess truly reaches people from every walk of life and can appeal to people of any mental stability.

A Russian serial killer named Alexander Pichushkin was arrested and charged with 49 counts of murder, although some believe that he had already claimed up to 60 victims. He was named "The Chessboard Killer" for his bizarre statement that he wanted to kill 64 people, one for every square on the board.

After suffering a head injury during his childhood, he was noted to be both hugely intelligent and volatile. Possessing a deep interest in chess, he would play many games at home and in a local park. Turning increasingly to alcohol, his anger and resentment grew and he began to kill with his methods being both brutal and disturbing.

As with anything else of this nature, it is advised that fuller details are readily available but will not be repeated here. Research further at your own peril.

He remains incarcerated to this day, his sentence being life in prison with the first fifteen years to be spent in solitary confinement.
