Welcome to the post-apocalypse, ladies and gents! On the left, you'll see crumbled remnants of a once-grand metropolis, on your right; a horde of unspeakable abominations formed from irradiated flesh and bone. For this wholly generic premise, we'll go with nuclear war as the cause of all the devastation. Classic.
Video games are great. They boast the ultimate in interactive entertainment, a medium that can indulge even the wildest of 'what if?' future scenarios, let's not waste that gift on flogging the dead horse that is the post-apocalypse.
Instead, why not present us with the vision of a pristine utopia, or a cyber/steampunk sandbox to get lost in? God knows, there's plenty of sub-genres sorely underrepresented in the industry, picking any one of them would be a step in the right direction.
But hey, it could be worse. We could be facing another calendar year rammed with the most tired, cliché-ridden hybrid ever - the zombie apocalypse.
Oh, right, Days Gone. And State of Decay 2. And Metal Gear Survive.
