10 Massively Misleading Trailers NOTHING Like The Final Game
5. Anthem
Another game we can pop in the ‘oof’ category is the gloriously promising and ultimately underwhelming Anthem.
BioWare games are so generally celebrated that pretty much everybody I know went and played all the Mass Effect games again when Legendary Edition came out. I’m actually still working through them on Twitch right now and why not, they’re great games. But it’s the almost universal love for these games, and Dragon Age, that had gamers amped up for Anthem.
Though we had received Mass Effect Andromeda two years prior, so maybe we should have been prepared. Anthem’s pre-release trailers were gorgeous, laced with intriguing story beats, and included what looked to be super exciting co-op combat.
Anthem still has you hooked out the gate because it’s absolutely beautiful, then you start playing and it all pretty much falls apart from there.
Combat was painful, the mission structure was tired and repetitive, it was buggy as all get out, and the story was incredibly weak. It seemed that Anthem tried so hard to be the next Destiny killer, it wasn’t much of anything on its own two feet. The studio completely dropped the ball on everything but the traversal and just two years after its launch EA announced they’d be pulling the plug on the game.
