10 Memories All Original PlayStation Owners Share

8. Being Strangely Impressed By FMVs

The PlayStation represented the start of the 3D era of gaming, which was a huge leap forwards for the medium. Players were now free of the constraints of 2D and willingly left the world of sprites behind to embrace the glorious pointiness of the polygon. Yet somehow, it was the PlayStation's ability to play FMVs that grabbed people's attention in its early days. Even though it was just playing a video file from a disc, it was an endearing feature that made the console feel cutting-edge. Suddenly, the amount of FMVs a game had became a selling point with even beloved classics like Final Fantasy VII proudly proclaiming that it featured over 90 minutes of cut-scenes on the back of its box. FMVs did become more than just a gimmick and proved to be excellent at accentuating a pivotal point in a game's story when used correctly. It was something that PS1 owners enjoyed smugly rubbing in the face of anyone that owned a Nintendo 64.

When I'm not playing games, I'm probably either writing about them somewhere or singing stupid songs inspired by them. Or eating pizza.
