In what was probably an attempt to differentiate the PlayStation from its competitors, Sony made the console's disc's surface blacker than if Death did a characteristically morbid black comedy about space. For early adopters and children especially, seeing them for the first time was a moment of utter befuddlement that momentary over-powered the excitement that comes with getting a shiny new console.
