10 Modern Video Game Tropes We're Totally Sick Of

5. Getting Duplicates In Loot Systems

OVERWATCH LOOT BOX

Literally no one feels anything other than annoyance or frustration when they spin the wheel on a random reward mechanic, only for the results to come back with something you already own. Your options are then to "try again!", or give up and do something else.

It sucked with card and sticker packs as a kid, and it sucks now.

Like, yes, I absolutely get the need for duplicates in theory. They certainly bulk out any 'random number generator' (RNG) part of a game, and theoretically - depending on how insidious the drop rates are - gives your game a few year's worth of "replayability".

But honestly, have you ever seen this as anything other than a necessary evil on the corporate side?

Even the otherwise beloved Overwatch suffered from this, seeing a few match's worth of game-time reduced to getting the same stickers or sprays you already had, leaving you to convert them into currency for another spin of the wheel.

It would certainly be harder on the art department, but how about we eliminate duplicates from loot systems going forward?
