10 Modern Video Game Tropes We're Totally Sick Of

4. Four-Tiered Loot Systems

Speaking of suffering, the standard "four colour loot system" is looking VERY long in the tooth.

When everything from Star Wars Battlefront 2 to freakin' Fortnite has pumped out gear ranging from blue to green, purple and gold, it's time for a change.

Essentially, I'd say we are overdue a remix of how to even do any long-form rollout of equipment.

Maybe there should be a focus on augmented abilities instead; more types of weapon damage or a way to get around boxing so much stuff into so few pools. If our rewards are colour-coded it only pushes us towards the upper echelons of what's on offer, and that makes the majority of the experience feel way too throwaway.

For one thing, the majority of players are discarding so much gear from the first two (if not three) tiers of rewards, it's a spectacular waste of time on the development side. This depends on how the game is tweaked overall, but it's safe to say we're all far too familiar with grey and green items meaning literally nothing - eliciting no response - only for the items at the end of the line to have any personality.
