10 Monumental Video Game Plot Twists Nobody Saw Coming
2. Old Man Shaun - Fallout 4
After an emotional, carrot-on-the-stick journey across post-apocalyptic Boston, disintegrating your way through hordes of raiders, super mutants, and synths, you finally reach your darling son, only to have it revealed that he’s a robot and that your real son is actually the head of the dubious organisation you’ve been fighting. What the actual swear word.
The Fallout series is full of choices to make, from how you interact with NPCs to what banner you fight under. Most of the situations that the games place you in the middle of usually fall down to fighting for either a good, bad, or neutral side.
To give credit to Fallout 4, the parties on hand (the Institute, Railroad and Brotherhood) all had grey areas that boiled down to the player’s actual opinion rather than a straight up good vs. evil, right vs. wrong scenario. With regards to the Institute, it came down to whether you could forgive Shaun for stringing you along with false hope all that time (I couldn’t).
Finding out the truth about your son put you at an emotional and narrative crossroad, making a lot of players rethink their entire campaign up to that point.
