Though Pokémon Legends: Arceus has been a critical and commercial success, players were nevertheless left picking their jaws up off the floor early in the game when a major change was made to the series' lore.

Arceus, a prequel to Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, has Professor Laventon explain to the player exactly how Poké Balls work, and his declaration shook the entire damn fandom. Laventon said:

"You'll recall, of course, that Pokémon possess the odd power to shrink themselves down. With the Poké Balls we craft, we can make use of that power to catch them!"

Given that the existing fan consensus was that Poké Balls were able to shrink Pokémon down to size, it was incredibly shocking to learn that this wasn't in fact the case, and that Pokémon are instead shrinking themselves.

Some fans are however refusing to give up the fight and insist that Laventon is simply making a speculative explanation for something he can't fully make sense of.

Which ever side you take, though, it certainly got people talking and wondering why something so weird was shoehorned into the game at all. Like the Force in Star Wars, some things are just better left unexplained.
