As proof that something can be out of place but ultimately totally awesome, we have Life is Strange: True Colors.

Though the game is focused on protagonist Alex Chen's attempts to solve the mystery of her brother's death, it's really a wider character-driven drama that fully immerses the player in the gorgeous mining town of Haven Springs.

Yet this slice-of-life aspect takes a charmingly off-kilter turn in the game's third chapter, where Haven Springs' residents partake in a town-wide LARP (Live-Action Role Play) session.

This includes Alex, and so the bulk of the chapter is basically an hour-long parody of RPGs, as players venture off on fetch quests, get in fights, talk to local characters, and even slay the final boss.

It's certainly not challenging in the slightest but still a whole lot of fun, if also totally out of the blue in a game that was marketed as a murder-mystery yarn.

For a significant chunk of the eight-hour experience to be an adorable meta-game is wholly out of place, but in the best way.
