2. Killing Cutie - It Takes Two
The great joy of It Takes Two is that it constantly changes-up its own gameplay loop, fleeting from platformer to fighting game to Diablo clone, and so on.
While most of these gameplay variations slotted perfectly into the game's overall vibe, there is one sequence which has remained infamous ever since release.
Protagonists May and Cody - a soon-to-divorce married couple who get turned into miniature dolls - believe they will be turned back to normal if they can get their daughter, Rose, to spill tears on them.
And so, they hatch a demented plan to kill her favourite stuffed toy, the adorable, squeaky-voiced Cutie the Elephant.
Such begins a mission in which players chase Cutie around, capture her, rip her ear and leg off, and eventually drop her to her demise.
To make it worse, Cutie spends the whole ordeal begging you to spare her all while May and Cody profusely apologise, and worst of all, the resulting tears from Rose don't even return them to normal.
While many players felt that the scene went too far, it was clearly supposed to be out of place, juxtaposing May and Cody's unhinged joy at making their daughter cry with the utter horror of mutilating and killing Cutie.
It's easy to imagine director Josef Fares maniacally cackling to himself while coming up with such an horrific scene, but at least Cutie's patched-up presence in the end credits suggests she was probably brought back to life.
