Spec Ops: The Line is one of the most impressively and unexpectedly tricky video games of the last decade: a seemingly familiar military shooter with a whole lot more on its mind than anyone could've ever anticipated.

But even outside of its surprisingly cerebral approach to its protagonist, the game opens with a blistering taste of the end sequence.

It kicks off with protagonist Walker and his squad-mates Adams and Lugo flying through Dubai in a helicopter, battling a fleet of enemy choppers until a sandstorm causes a mid-air collision.

The player has control of the chopper's mini-gun for all of about two minutes before the crash, after which the story jumps back to the start of the entire mission, with the three Delta Force operators first reaching the outskirts of Dubai.

But players don't learn the outcome of the chopper crash until the final passage of the game - about 45 minutes from the end - as the fractured state of Walker's psyche is fully unveiled.
