2. The Sims 4
As with the Animal Crossing series, The Sims games are among the most popular life sims ever. Interestingly, though, they take very different approaches to the genre.
Players control their Animal Crossing villager directly, as they go about their lives in their small town/island world. The Sims takes more of a realistic route: out with the idealised fishing lifestyle and anthropomorphic talking hamsters, in with the jobs, relationship issues and other aspects of human life.
In the end, though, both franchises deliver the same thing: a potentially endless simulation of life.
Why You’ll Never 100% It:
The very concept of The Sims means that it won’t ever be ‘completed.’ As the series developed, this became increasingly clear. The appeal of the series lies in the storylines that develop. You don’t necessarily create just a Sim, a couple or a household, you can control a neighbourhood community. You don’t always have a say in what happens between everybody, either!
Rivalries and relationships bloom, children are born, promotions are won and lost. From the player’s position as ‘observer,’ they can quickly find they’re in for a whole lot more than they bargained for. That cute couple you made? You’re going to be responsible for them and their children, and their children’s children, and their children’s children’s children…
