10 Most Anticipated 2020 Video Games
5. Doom Eternal
Release Date: 20 March
If there's one game we can look at this year and go "if nothing else, this is going to be a total blast to play", then it's got to be Doom Eternal.
Sequel to 2016's Doom - which is one of the best pure shooter experiences of the last few years - Eternal looks to be taking the similar approach of delivering a fast-paced, punchy and satisfying combat loop that will make you feel like an absolute god as you murder your way through an army of demons. The developers have said that their main focus is making the violence as visceral and exciting as possible, and based upon everything we know about it so far, Eternal will definitely live up to that promise.
On top of introducing several new enemy types for you to destroy, there's a grappling hook which allows you to yank yourself close to an enemy and shoot them more intimately, wall-climbing and dashing for more movement freedom, a "Destructible Demons" system - which basically means you can tear enemies apart piece by piece as opposed to killing them in one go - and even a hub where Doom Slayer can hang out between murder sessions.
We're not expecting this one to have the same storytelling heft as something like The Last Of Us Part II, but that doesn't matter one iota: Doom is all about the gameplay, and Eternal's looks like an improved and expanded version of the addictive shooting we got in its 2016 predecessor.
