Unless you were lame - or sensible - enough to use the Konami Code and get 30 extra lives, there was only one conceivable way to get through this game in one piece, and that was with the game's ultimate weapon - The Spread Gun. Don't get me wrong, the game is still a manic, frustrating experience even when you've got this weapon at hand, but it can helpfully ward off the Continue screen during some tricky, tight situations, because it allows you to fire so much at the screen at once. Given how much is going on during any one time in Contra, this weapon is a God-send, allowing you to dispose of multiple enemies in one burst of ammo, which will typically fire out 5 bullets in different directions in one go. It's great for taking on those pesky enemies that are your frequent foil, and the gun makes the boss fights so much easier too.
