2. Disco – TimeSplitters: Future Perfect

Are you ready to boogie 'til dawn and get jiggy with it on the dance floor? Looks like some time-travelling weirdos have caught more than just disco fever; they've turned the dance competition into a shooting gallery!

The Disco level from the third game in the TimeSplitters series is a goofy place to blow up flamethrower-wielding monkeys with flare pistols in, and a fantastic one at that. It's also where the credits sequence takes place as the protagonist dances away. Best credits sequence evah!

Owned by the grooviest detective of the swingin' sixties, Harry Tipper, it's decorated with disco balls, fluorescent lights, aquarium tanks, and a gold statue of the man himself strutting a funky pose.

Its maze-like layout, compact size and curved ramps make it an excellent choice for deathmatches, as well as chase-based modes like BagTag. The beloved Virus mode, a game of tig build-up with green fire, is also strongly recommended here. Talk about a real disco inferno.

One of the greatest features about this level is the soundtrack. Appropriately enough, it's a six minute-long, deliciously groovy dance track that will reel you in after a single listen. Series composer Graeme Norgate created another audio masterpiece.

And to think, in 2006, first-person shooters were taking place in some of the most ridiculous locations to have a shoot-out, featuring a pot-pourri cast of futuristic space marines, killer robots, putrid zombies, trigger-happy monkeys and the like.

Nowadays, it's nothing more than run-of-the-mill space stations, Soviet bases and war-torn towns, featuring some of the most generic protagonists (either super soldier John D. Fault, or Miss Woman, who's been sex-swapped because, supposedly, a generic woman is better than a generic man...even though they're still generic).

TimeSplitters fans, never forget.
