10 Most Brutally Difficult NES Games EVER

1. Battletoads

Rare

If saying the name Battletoads evokes cherished memories of the TMNT rip-off you loved, you wouldn't be alone.

The studio Rare created a game to cheekily cash in on turtles fever that was sweeping the world in the 1980s and 1990s. The result was anthropomorphic toads that beat bad guys up, and though it sadly didn't launch a mega-media behemoth like Turtles did, it did spawn a very successful game series.

The first game, simply called Battletoads, arrived on the NES in 1991 with its blend of beat-em-up and platforming action that even featured vehicle-based levels.

It's a variety of gameplay that made the game a delight to play, that was until the Wind Tunnel level. Those two words alone are enough to trigger a panic attack for any gamer who put themselves through the shockingly challenging level again, and again, and again, in order to beat it.

The chances are you'd smashed your controller into smithereens before you managed to complete it, but the payoff was worth it.

Just about.
