5. Arm Cannon - Metroid Series
The original Metroid introduced gamers to three incredible revelations: the surprise reveal that our hero was in fact a heroine – the now famous Samus, her augmentable Power Suit, and the attached Arm Cannon.
Since the original, released on the NES in 1986, there have been a total of 11 Metroid games and, to be frank, it's not enough. What makes Samus such a fun character to play is her sheer effectiveness as a one-woman army (honestly, she was the Master Chief before Halo had even been conceived, has defeated two alien races, battled space pirates, and blown up an entire planet – accusations of genocide aside, that's hard to top).
The reason Samus is able to take on such odds and win is because she is armed with her trusty Arm Cannon – one of the first weapons to be on-the-fly augmentable. As Samus dodged, dived and ducked over and under wave after wave of enemy fire, she is able to attack pick-ups which instantly alter her primary weapon.
Over time the Metroid games have modernised, making for not only more creative attack options, but puzzle solving as well. Stuck in a chamber with no obvious means of escape?
No matter – just attach a rocket launcher pickup and the Arm Cannon transforms into a wall destroying device that allows Samus to carve a route to safety.
