10 Most Creative Traps For Video Game Cheaters
8. Interrupting Their Path - World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft is one of the biggest and longest-running MMORPGs in the world, so naturally it has had to deal with cheaters for quite some time.
Over the two decades of the admins' war against illegitimate players, the most common enemy has been bot accounts, which would swarm Warcraft's servers and gather all of their rare resources like some sort of digital locust.
In the early stages of the game, when the developers had limited means of tracking and banning bots, the admins (or GMs, short for Game Masters), had to find alternative means of preventing the servers from becoming barren wastelands, and their solution was pretty ingenious in its simplicity.
Because the bots were programmed to follow specific paths from one resource to another, the GMs would manually add obstacles along the most straightforward routes.
Through literal sticks and stones regularly added or removed along specific paths, the GMs broke the not-so-literal bones of the bots' programming, significantly reducing their impact on their servers.
Now, this method is less effective these days, what with modern AI technology and the bots' overwhelming numbers on WoW's servers, but you still have to appreciate the creativity of the game's original administrators.
