3. Tetris Effect

People will discard Tetris Effect as "just more Tetris", and whilst that's already foolish as Tetris is one of the most effortlessly engaging and addictive of everything gaming has created, Effect is an altogether more entrancing beast.

Helmed by Lumines' Tetsuya Mizuguchi, his emerging signature style is a pulse-pounding match of hallucinogenic visuals with a brain-tweaking electronica soundtrack. The result is something that draws you into a state of pure connection; one where you don't even think of pushing buttons or engaging with a game, but your motor responses are trained to look for the next piece; the next line; the next high score.

Add on a revolutionary "Zone mechanic" where you can freeze time, queue up a ton of lines and then trigger the whole thing for a burst of music and visual flourish, and it's hard to put into words just how pure and satisfying this thing can be.

Tetris Effect, man. Go check it out.
