2. First Steps In Yharnam - Bloodborne
It's a given that your first experience of a game that proudly presentS itself as being the toughest AAA game since, well, the last game from the same developer, is going to be gruelling. But even though it's likely that you arrive at Bloodborne after plenty of experience with the Souls series and even though there are plenty of gameplay similarities between the two, it quickly becomes apparent that you're dealing with an altogether different... Beast. Even though you should survive your very first melees in Yharnam (God help you if you don't), even Souls players will be shocked at the aggressiveness of the AI, and the fact that the best way to combat it is to be aggressive yourself. It doesn't come naturally, as you'll instinctively fumble the L1 button to get your shield up Souls-style, before realising that there are no shields here - only single-shot guns, dodging and particularly violent-looking melee weapons. You also constantly get caught off-guard by the sneakiness of enemies, as they emphasise the game's horror sensibilities by ambushing you from darkened corners, alleys, and other nooks and crannies. You'll die plenty of times in those first few hours, as Bloodborne quickly and brutally teaches you that it's not just Dark Souls with a Victorian makeover.
