10 Most Disappointing Video Game Sequels Of All Time
3. Crash Nitro Kart
Crash Team
Racing, as kart racer fans will surely know, was a triumph. The Mario Kart
series spawned legions of pretenders and hopefuls, but ultimately, only Crash
Bandicoot’s 1999 effort really challenged it.
The problem, after Sony’s system acquired its own kart racing classic, was following it up. Crash Nitro Kart arrived four years later, and the PlayStation 2 title really didn’t push the envelope.
The roster of racers was always going to be a sticking point, as (just as with Super Smash Bros. versus PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale) the Crash Bandicoot series doesn’t have as many notable names. What Nitro Kart did elsewhere, though, was simply throw more of the same together and open the big box of Kart Racer Zaniness to see what it could find.
Vicarious Visions didn’t take the change to stamp their own style on Naughty Dog’s original, and the game was so similar to it in some areas that it has the feel of a bit more of an expansion pack. In 2019, fortunately, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled bundled the content of both games together (as pictured here).
