10 Most Disturbing Sci-Fi Video Games You'll Ever Play
4. Dead Space
Another game set on a dark and desolate space craft, Dead Space sees the player assume the role of engineer Isaac Clarke, who is sent to the USG Ishimura to perform repairs and search for his girlfriend.
Unbeknownst to Isaac, the crew of the Ishimura are not only deceased, but have been reanimated into the horrific Necromorph species by an infection loose aboard this stricken vessel.
Much like the titular creatures of the Alien franchise, the Necromorphs exist to further infect the masses and propagate their kind, attacking the uninfected living at the drop of a hat (or helmet, I suppose).
Presented in the over-the-shoulder view popularised by Resident Evil 4, the presentation and atmosphere of Dead Space is the real star here.
Dark, gloomy corridors, blood-spattered walls and floors, flickering lights, an extremely effective soundtrack, and the evidence of destruction and evisceration all around our lowly engineer are disturbing enough by themselves.
Throw into this mix some legitimately horrific enemies, and you have a true horror classic on your blood drenched hands.
Games which truly frighten, unnerve and disturb the player are a rare commodity, but Dead Space (and its sequels, though to a lesser extent), is definitely one which delivers on this promise.
