10 Most Disturbing Sci-Fi Video Games You'll Ever Play
3. Doom 3
Of all of the titles in the Doom series, the third entry is definitely the outlier.
The original Doom and its sequels Doom 2 and Doom 64 are famous for their fast pacing, short levels, their abundance of hellspawn enemies, and run and gun, chainsaw swinging action.
The more modern entries, Doom 2016 and the brilliant Doom Eternal, are similarly focused but to the Nth degree, with still faster, more frenetic, and even more AWESOME shooting, ripping and tearing gameplay - not to mention the heavy rock soundtracks.
Doom 3, on the other hand, substitutes methodical for manic, choosing caution over chaos.
This game sees you traversing dark, seemingly desolate corridors with the only light coming from your ever-depleting flashlight.
Into this cone of vision jumps a fire spewing demon or possessed marine to terrify and assault in equal measure.
Where the previous and subsequent Doom titles see the player subsist on pure adrenaline, Doom 3 is played in a constant state of anxiety and tension.
The brief moments of respite are ruined by a pipe bursting from a wall, a door being smashed in by something BIG, or the strangled screams of unfortunate victims.
It's relentless; Doom 3 is absolutely not for the faint of heart.
