10 Most Disturbing Sci-Fi Video Games You'll Ever Play

2. The Nightjar

Dead Space
Somethin' Else

A bizarre, very niche entry, but one which more than deserves its selection here.

From developer Somethin' Else, this 2012 IOS game is as disturbing as it is innovative.

Featuring the silky voice of a certain Benedict Cumberbatch, the player must evacuate the ship The Nightjar before it falls into a collapsing star.

The hook here, however, is that there are no visuals - you must hear your way through the game.

In order to accomplish this, the sound design is astounding, with ambient mechanical and electrical noises punctuating the near silence of the abandoned ship.

Sounds travel from your right ear to your left as you turn, allowing you to pinpoint your place in the pitch darkness, to better navigate throughout the doomed ship.

As things take a turn for the worst, it is more than just gears and sensors you will hear in the darkness as you struggle to turn the life support back on and escape your fate.

Not even the familiar voice of Mr Cumberbatch can keep the utter dread from permeating every pore, as the ship's automated, emotionless voice announces that there are now "...two life forms aboard the Nightjar. Of these two, one is human...".

Nothing is as it seems here...

Absolutely terrifying.
