4. Final Fantasy Series

Final Fantasy

The Final Fantasy series and several specific games within it have been credited for introducing and popularizing many concepts that are today widely used in console RPGs. The original title is cited as one of the most influential early console RPGs, and played a major role in legitimizing and popularizing the genre. Many console RPGs featured one-on-one battles against monsters from a first-person perspective.

Along with all of this Final Fantasy also introduced a class evolving system, and a whole load methods of transportation such as, Ships, Canoes, and Flying Airships. Not to mention that it also brought an activity based progression system to the table, which has been used in later RPGS such as, SaGa, Grandia, Fire Emblem and The Elder Scrolls.

In addition to this the series also introduced the job system and a character progression engine which allowed the characters to change classes. Not only this but it also allowed the player to grow and acquire new classes which were more advanced and even let them combine class abilities.

Overall, Final Fantasy is considered a milestone for the RPG genre introducing powerful dramatic storylines while placing heavy emphasis on character development and personal relationships.

Final Fantasy VII is credited with having the largest impact on the series by really allowing console RPG€™s to gain mass market appeal.
