Even at the end of the first game, Sora has been through a lot. Despite losing his home, his friends and even the Keyblade at one point, he does not give up. He also demonstrates a disregard for his own safety on several occasions, running in recklessly whenever he sees anyone in danger.

This becomes especially apparent in Hollow Bastion when Ansem (while possessing Riku) reveals that Kairi’s heart has been inside Sora since Destiny Islands was lost to the darkness.

Throughout the game, Sora has experienced his own memories of Kairi, as well as various auditory and visual hallucinations. This is because while her heart was stolen, due to her status as a Princess of Heart, it could not be consumed by the Darkness and ended up inside Sora instead.

After defeating Ansem to save Riku, Sora decides that the only way he can save Kairi is by using the Keyblade on himself to free her heart, so it can return to her body. Sora immediately falls backwards before disappearing.

Due to his previous actions and constant determination to save his friends, it is not difficult to believe that he would be willing to permanently sacrifice himself.
