8. Phantasmagoria
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3hX0rbw1rA Phantasmagoria is laughed off by most contemporary gamers because it emerged during that awkward period when video games were trying to be interactive movies but really didn't have the budget to do it convincingly; thus we had these awkward - if perversely entertaining - games where terrible actors would interact with dodgy visual effects amid a bizarre, often incomprehensible supernatural narrative. Phantasmagoria was one such game, if also one of the more memorable ones, and one of the reasons for that is that it really pushed the boat out as far as video game content goes, indulging in graphic gore and even a rape scene. The above video is of one of the game's more revolting moments, as Adrienne is attacked by her husband Dan, who has become a demon since the pair moved into what used to be an evil magician's mansion. The demon rips her face in half - with some surprisingly convincing effects, at least when confined to this grainy YouTube clip - in one of gaming's most genuinely stomach-churning moments, shocking the first time you see it, and unlike most of the rest of the game, not unintentionally funny in any way (despite the crappy CGI).
