10 Most Mourned Sports Video Games Franchises
7. Tiger Woods PGA Tour
Tiger Woods PGA Tour was such a success that even a sex scandal and complete loss of form for its cover star could not kill it off, with yearly releases continuing even after the majority of Woods’ sponsors had dropped him and and the trophies had long stopped rolling in. Releasing as simply PGA Tour Golf in 1990, the series would pick up Woods’ name in 1999, a partnership that would continue until 2013. The series led golf games from being disappointing affairs, as parodied by The Simpson’s Lee Carvallo’s Putting Challenge, into legitimately some of the most popular titles on the market.
The series tried to continue with Rory McIlroy for the last EA game in 2014, but it has to be recognised that Woods was a once in a generation talent and personality, with McIlroy’s title suffering a considerable dip in sales. What followed was a barren few years for golf games, with only more novel games such as Everybody’s Golf drawing any real acclaim. The PGA Tour name was revived in PGA Tour 2K21, to some success, but it is telling that most praise from critics made reference to recapturing the magic of the Tiger Woods series.
