10 Most Overrated Video Games Of The Past Decade
5. Rise Of The Tomb Raider
The rebooted Tomb Raider title showed incredible potential for what a Lara Croft adventure could be in modern day. The sequel sounded like the perfect step forward; with hub worlds, more tombs, and a story that continued to address the mental effects of what Lara does. Then the game released and got stellar reviews. However, as you may imagine, it's just a smidge overrated.
So what was wrong with it? Well, pretty much everything except for graphics and performance. The game ran well and was extremely pretty, but those are the best parts. The hub worlds are pretty empty, with a few tombs in each, the animal hunting is basic busywork, set-pieces are trite, and the story is unintentionally laugh-out-loud funny.
Then there's the final boss fight, in which you fight a helicopter for no reason, and, eye-rollingly, must do the same thing three times to defeat it! The tired rule of three.
Crystal Dynamics make good games, and they should be able to stand toe-to-toe with peers like Uncharted. When compared to that series however, Tomb Raider is woeful. Seeing as Shadow has now had diminishing sales returns, it might be a while before we see another Croft game anyway.
