Sometimes love emerges in the most unlikely of places. From an objective standpoint, the spartan solider Master Chief and Cortana, and human-like incarnation of a computer program, could not be more different.

But as the old saying goes, opposites attract. You would be hard pushed to find a more loving relationship, which is exceedingly more complex, than you might imagine.

At the beginning of Halo 4, which most comprehensively develops the pairs relationship, Master Chief is awoken by Cortana. Here, she explains that she is nearing the end of her “life” cycle and that she will soon perish. Despite her computerised representation, she shows real emotion during this encounter.

Sadly, by the end of Halo 4, Cortana goes rogue, making the relationship between the two noticeably more strained. Consequently, fans are waiting with bated breath to see if this tragic love story, can somehow be reconciled.

Although some have moved to quell the suggestion that they are, or could ever be, anything more than best friends. it’s very clear that Master Chief and Cortana both care deeply for each other, despite their obvious differences.
