Wind Waker is an adorable-looking game and it implements its cute and upbeat nature throughout the entire game. That being said, the final fight against Ganondorf completely contradicts this. While it may be comical that they’ve turned the big-bad-evil guy of the franchise into a dual-wielding ninja, the brutality with which he attacks Zelda paints his as a true villain.

However, the final blow is what makes the ending of this game oddly brutal. Leaping up into the air, you come down on Ganondorf with a sword through the skull. Most kills in the world of Zelda simply have the enemies burst in a cloud of darkness, but not this one. Instead, Ganondorf is still smiling in his final moments, that sadistic and off-putting grin. As he slowly turns to stone, your sword still lodged in his head, you realise you’ve won and he won’t come back, if only through the sheer brutality with which you finished him off.
