10 Most Shocking Gaming Betrayals
1. Atlas - BioShock
BioShock’s now infamous twist plays on our ingrained expectations of video game conventions. We never actually see Atlas, apart from a brief glimpse of his silhouette from afar. We speaks to us over a radio, telling us what to do. We can see a picture of him in the corner of our screen, and he looks to be a friendly chap.
But Atlas takes advantage of this trust – not only is he actually a criminal revolutionary called Frank Fontaine, he’s also the protagonist’s father. To make things even worse, he’s been controlling our every move through deep hypnosis, which is activated using the trigger phrase “would you kindly?”
Everything you knew to be true about Atlas – his boyish good looks, his soft Irish brogue, the fact that he was a loving husband and father – was completely untrue. He has a strong Brooklyn accent, is a downright despicable father, and looks like a GI Joe that’s been caught in a meat grinder.
All this time, he’d been using his own son as a pawn in a fiendish power play, without ever letting on his true intentions. If that’s not the ultimate betrayal, we don’t want to know what is.
