One of the most infamous crowd-funded games of all time, Mighty No. 9 - a side-scrolling successor to Mega Man led by Keiji Inafune - launched on Kickstarter in 2012 with the goal of raising $900,000, a target it hit in a mere two days. Notable for being one of the first crowd-funded games launched in Japan, the title ended up amassing $4 million, as the developers constantly added new stretch goals to keep the funding going.

After completing the first Kickstarter, the team launched another crowd-funding project a little while later, along with a Kickstarter for another game that failed to hit its $900,000 target. Despite being initially successful, the perceived greed of the team, along with the worry that they were over-stretching themselves, led to tempered expectations, which were deemed to be valid when the game was delayed multiple times.

Finally releasing after suffering through some drastic changes (most salient being the noticeable downgrade to the artstyle), Mighty No. 9 became one of the first major crowd-funding disappointments, pissing off the majority of its fans and backers while receiving middling reviews across the board.
