10 Most Successful Crowdfunded Video Games Of All Time
5. Torment: Tides Of Numenera
A spiritual successor to Planetscape: Torment, Tides of Numenera was talked about for years before the devs eventually launched a Kickstarter to help make it become a reality in 2013. Initially attempting to gain $900,000 and closing out with $4.2 million, funding actually continued on its official website, with another $900,000 being raised after the Kickstarter had ended.
Despite a successful campaign though, trouble began almost immediately. Initially pencilled in for a 2014 release date, the window was pushed all the way back to 2017 because the developers were helping Obsidian create Wasteland 2. When the title did finally release, it received pretty solid reviews from critics - 8s across the board for the most part - however it didn't fare so well with actual players and backers.
Currently enjoying a mere 6/10 on Steam, a lot of the negativity stems from the failure on the developers' part to deliver an RPG that properly reacted to player choice and actions, with criticism also being levelled at the awkward nature of the overarching story. Still, it wasn't a total write off, and found a fanbase that enjoyed the end product for what it was.
