10 Most Terrifying Moments in Gaming History

2. Condemned: Criminal Origins €“ Why€™d It Have To Be Mannequins?!

If you were a child of the 80€™s/early 90€™s, you might remember a live-action horror show aimed at teens called €˜Are You Afraid of the Dark€™. There was one episode where this kid got trapped in a mall after hours; it wasn€™t long before the store mannequins came to life and began to stalk him in the stiff, emotionless way that you might expect. For some reason, it terrified me and ever since then, I€™ve had mild Pediophobia - an irrational fear of mannequins. Then, years later, this happened to me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPP5Ja7YNas Honest to god, when those mannequins phased around me for the first time, I felt like my living room had just tromboned €“ like that moment in Jaws when Roy Schnieder first sees the shark €“ and I didn€™t know what to do next. I didn€™t want to move in case they phased after me again; I didn€™t want to stay put in case they got me; I didn€™t want to look at them in case they came to life; I didn€™t want to look away for the same reason. And for a split second, I was truly fearful. My worst nightmare had come true, as if the game had reached into my subconscious to find out exactly what I was afraid of. It was a truly frightening experience for me personally, but I€™m certain this moment put the shits up nearly everyone who played it. The reason: mannequins, in a horror setting, are f*cking terrifying.
