10 Most Terrifying Moments in Gaming History

1. Silent Hill 2 €“ Pyramid Head Commits a Rape

There are several theories dotted around the internet about the actual story of Silent Hill 2 €“ what the town represents; who the two Pyramid Heads are and what they might mean. I won€™t go into it in detail here as there€™s probably enough to fill a book, but suffice it to say, there€™s enough psychosexual subtext at play in Silent Hill 2 to make Freud avert his eyes in shame. Here€™s one such moment, which never fails to dredge up an acerbic concoction of fear and disgust in the player: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vprETGvyShM That€™s right, Pyramid Head is not only a monster, he€™s also a monster raper. There are four major factors that contributed to this being one of my most terrifying moments in gaming history: The immediate fear that Pyramid Head would notice me and kill me, and christ, is he scary looking. The disturbing connotations of his rape victims (animated monsters comprised of two sets of mannequin legs sewn together at the hip; meaning two vaginas and no head; meaning total and ultimate feminine objectification, which is just€depraved, in a Human Centipede sort of way) The fact that a rape was essentially being committed and the protagonist was doing nothing to stop it. The fact that I, the player, was watching from a closet; I suddenly played the role of a voyeur perving on this whole f*cked up mess, and that stirred up an uneasy sense of guilt in the pit of my stomach. God-damnit Konami. Where other games go for the cheap scare you guys really go for the psyche, don€™t you? Instead of a quick jump, Silent Hill 2 slowly chips away at your subconscious, reaching in to the deepest corners of your Id before making a fist and swishing it around. And for that, we salute them! So there are our ten most terrifying moments from our gaming past. You've no doubt got your own, and we love to hear about 'em. Do let us know below won't you.
