10 Most Terrifying Video Game Zombies
4. Poison Zombie - Half-Life 2
Half-Life’s Headcrab zombie has always been a disturbing design, what with the enormous parasite attached to their head and their gaping chest cavity on display. Half-life 2, in a perfect example of sequel escalation, introduced new, more horrifying zombies - the Poison Zombie being the pick of the bunch.
These zombies were the victim of the newly introduced Poison Headcrabs, which are far more frightening than their comparatively chunky and cute cousins. Poison Headcrabs have the unfortunate dual characteristics of moving similarly to spiders and hissing like snakes just to ensure they’re triggering simultaneous phobias at once.
The Poison Zombies themselves are muscular, hunch-backed monstrosities, covered in Poison Headcrabs which act both as body armour and ammunition; their main form of attack consists of hurling said Poison Headcrabs at their victims with the accuracy and power of an NFL quarterback. Any of these gross projectiles that hit will temporarily reduce the player to one measly health point.
The noises produced by Poison Zombies deserve special mention: a strange combination of hissing, wailing, and something like the mooing of an asthmatic cow quickly become the sound you’ll dread hearing the most during Half-Life 2.
