It can be divisive ranking the entire God of War series into one entry on a list, but even though Ascension was a lifeless sequel and GoW III turned Kratos into an irredeemable maniac, the first two were absolutely outstanding.

In terms of sheer brutality though, all three games rose the bar considerably, letting you do such things as rip the eyes out of many a cyclops, skewer a screen-sized Titan with a huge slab of rock, or just rip off a God's head with your bare hands.

Kratos himself became a cypher for sheer unbridled rage, and as Sony became increasingly adept at rendering the inner organs of all Greek mythology, they succeeded in creating one of the most hyper-violent and kinetic action games of all time.
