10 Most Underrated N64 Games Ever
8. Beetle Adventure Racing
When it comes to Nintendo racers, for many it starts and ends with the Mario Kart franchise, and for good reason. They’re some of the most accessible and enjoyable multiplayer games ever made, and many of them hold up well.
Unfortunately this meant Beetle Adventure Racing often didn’t get so much of a look on on the N64 - which, for race fans, is a crying shame.
The detail ploughed into this game is truly impressive, with lengthy, challenging courses full of secrets and shortcuts, no end of things to discover. It may lack the variety of Mario Kart or Diddy Kong Racing, but for pure racing mechanics, it gives both prominent titles a run for their money.
Published by EA, whose Need For Speed franchise is one of the genre’s most successful, this is a game for those who wish to put their driving skills to the test without the levelers of oil slicks, banana peels, and the dreaded blue shells.
It’s also impressive how much personality the designers managed to get out of essentially the same car with a few sprite swaps. Licensing issues may be a sticking point, but a Beetle Adventure Racing revival would go down a storm.
