10 Most Underrated N64 Games Ever
7. Conker's Bad Fur Day
This has perhaps evolved beyond the title of underrated and into full fledged cult classic, but for the full experience, the XBox port just won’t do. With its needless censorship and polish, much of the game’s ramshackle charm is taken away - and true Conker fans must turn to the underselling (and now seriously pricey) N64 original.
Made at the height of Rare’s power, this uncommonly smutty title sees Conker the alcoholic squirrel journey home through a twisted cartoon universe after a heavy night at the pub. With the technicolour aesthetic of Banjo Kazooie and the humour of South Park or Viz, it’s no surprise that this game became a firm favourite of the adolescent contingent of the N64 fanbase.
With massively varied gameplay, razor sharp film spoofs, career best music from Rare composer Robin Beanland, and moments of surprising poignancy, it was never going to be a big seller, but it was always going to be beloved.
The Rare Replay collection brought Conker to a new audience, but as far as Nintendo goes, it’s unclear whether we’ll ever see the potty mouthed squirrel again. Given Banjo and Kazooie’s appearance in Smash Bros, though, there’s hope yet.
