5. Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Frictional Games

Although the theme of the game is horror, there is a large mystery surrounding the events of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Why did you wake up with your memory gone? Why is this castle so creepy? Where did these monsters come from? What's waiting in the Inner Sanctum?

Known for defining the horror genre with its unique mechanics that leave the player completely helpless and terrified, Frictional Games' Amnesia: The Dark Descent has you play as Daniel, a man with amnesia tasked with taking a dark descent through Brennenburg Castle on an order from his former self: "Find Alexander and kill him."

Since the development of Amnesia, many games have borrowed the mechanic of leaving the main character weaponless with only the darkness to hide them from threats.

Sanity meters are also a common sight in gaming. In Amnesia, and games since then, it's not so much about the gameplay itself, but the atmosphere of the game that gives life to the mystery and suspense the player feels while trekking through the darkness.

From the minute you wake up and find Daniel's note, you'll undoubtedly feel uneasy about completing this daunting task and solving the mystery of Daniel's plight.
