10 Most Value For Money RPGs In Gaming

5. Mass Effect 2

Bioware

Despite recent release missteps (we’re looking at you, Mass Effect: Andromeda), it’s undeniable that developer BioWare has historically been an auteur within the RPG genre. Hence, it earns itself a second mention on this list.

Whilst not the first game in the series, Mass Effect 2 is easily the most beloved entry by fans and critics alike. Having clearly learned from the successes of Dragon Age: Origins, released between the first and second Mass Effect, exclusive focus on the main plot was exchanged for a system where side quests and optional character relations can hold just as much quality and impact on the story and player experience. The ability to import a completed save of the prior game to influence plot elements was also implemented, emphasising the impact of player choices.

Though other RPG mechanics were reduced in kind, the overall darker tone and improved third-person shooter combat were considered a step forward for the series, and the game is widely considered one of the greatest ever released.

While it doesn’t necessarily boast as much replayability value as some of the other games we’ve featured, the sheer quality of Mass Effect 2 in all aspects makes it one of the best value RPGs you could spend your money on.
