FromSoftware

FromSoftware is a developer well-known for producing some of the best (and most punishing) RPGs in the industry, having even originated the ‘Souls-like’ sub-genre based on their core gameplay mechanics, and any of their releases could have easily made this list. However, among these, the newest entry to the family Elden Ring wins the overall crown.

Though it retains many of the classic FromSoftware role-playing aspects, like a variety of starting classes, weapons, and an often-baffling to the uninitiated stats system, Elden Ring boasts one thing none of the prior games do: a massive open world. The Lands Between is beautiful and frightening, housing both traditionally locked and free-roaming bosses, and entirely open to the Tarnished for exploration from the very first level if you’re brave enough.

The sheer size of the world, combined with the classic stats, classes, and multiple possible endings, means that replayability is through the roof for fresh runs, let alone the increased combat challenge that New Game+ brings to those who chose to keep their character.

Elden Ring is also a fair amount more accessible in story than its predecessors, with A Song Of Ice And Fire author George R. R. Martin being drafted in to collaborate on the lore in the hopes of crafting a less oblique plot - and it worked! Having consolidated all of its developer’s expertise into one stunning package, Elden Ring is more than worth its price point.
