10 Most WTF Video Game Reboots
1. Fallout 3
Fallout fans had no idea what to expect when Bethesda dropped their Fallout 3 gameplay trailer all the way back in 2008. The beloved, turn-based, isometric RPG was now a shooter? Some people were not happy, to say the least.
It didn't help that the trailer itself focused almost exclusively on real-time action and cinematic kills, showcasing all the bullets, blood and explosions and none of the classic RPG mechanics that the final game would, in fact, keep mostly intact. Worst of all, the trailer spent all of one second showing off VATS, the brilliant system Bethesda implemented to replace turn-based combat but maintain the tactical elements of the older games.
It was a relief that the final product turned out be a fairly faithful implementation of the original systems into a 3D world. Combined with the skill for world-building Bethesda had already honed over several games, it set a whole new template for many RPGs to come. Once the initial shock wore off, fans realized how much more rewarding it was to explore the Fallout world up close.
It's too bad those same fans had to witness all their worst fears come true in Fallout 4.
