What? How the hell is Rocket League a weird concept? It's obviously ingenious! I can already hear the game's millions of fans already screaming (me among them). But let's take a step back for a second and describe it superficially; it's a game involving football and cars, two niches that, combined, would seem to appeal to a macho demographic of only the manliest of men. And yet those two elements fuse beautifully to form something far bigger than the sum of their parts. Yes, it's cars, and yes, it's in some ways a more pure, physics-based football game than anything FIFA can muster, but its mechanically simple gameplay and high skill ceiling make Rocket League one of the best, most addictive games released in recent years. The surprise success of Rocket League is all the more impactful because of the fact that its predecessor, Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battlecars, was, at best, a niche game with a very dedicated but small community. Some physics tweaks and a name change later, and we're living in a world where we can't imagine that little rocket-powered cars and a giant floaty football would be anything but one of the most fun things to do in front if a screen.
