9. Euro Truck Simulator 2/American Truck Simulator
There's a strange kind of fantasy attached to the idea of being a truck driver. There's a good chance it's never crossed your mind before, and that you've never envied truckers when you saw them in those long queues in the lay-bys of European motorways, or packing out the parking lots of service stations as the take a break on some 24-hour interstate journey, but there's something romantic about just you, in your big rig, hitting the open roads of the world. Euro Truck Simulator, and the more recent American variant, have accurately rendered thousands of miles of roads and cities, where you're tasked with doing what a truck driver does, and delivering goods from point A to point B - no running people over, no spectacular crashes or jumps, just you, the road, and the photo-realistic interior of your truck. If it sounds mundane then, well, yeah it kind of is, but in a blissful and really quite therapeutic way. The attention to detail in the places you drive through is spectacular, giving you a great sense of immersion wherever you go - it almost feels like a tourist trip from the perspective of a car, as you become familiar with the topography of Poland, or read the scammy roadside ads in California. You'd never have expected it, but trucking around for its own sake is one hell of an adventure.
