Jagex

Launched in 2001, this fantasy MMORPG from Jagex was all the rage back in the day, and is very much alive and kicking almost two decades later. Having captured the hearts of millions of players around the world since its inception, Runescape still manages to host over 100,000 active users each day, and the numbers don’t appear to be dwindling.

It’s hard to imagine how one of the most popular online multiplayer communities in the world started out from a humble browser game. While receiving an onslaught of updates over the years following its launch, Runescape evolved into having its own stand-alone desktop client, and even spurred the release of two sequels.

Though Runescape 3 (the most recent iteration of the game) has flashier graphics and a less ‘grindy’ route to the end-game, Classic Runescape or Old School Runescape (OSRS) still has a sizable and dedicated fanbase that are keen to welcome newcomers to the community.

Speaking of community, OSRS also has an interesting approach to updates. The community votes for or against ideas and content additions, and only those with a 75% majority vote end up in the game. Snazzy.
