In case you were confused about the premise of Garry’s Mod, rest assured you fall in the category of most people.

Named after its creator Garry Newman, this cheeky physics-based sandbox game was developed as a mod for Valve’s Source Engine back in 2004. It was later expanded into a stand-alone game published by Valve in 2006.

Using rag-doll physics and an open attitude toward user-created content, Garry’s Mod was the sole culprit behind thousands of custom game modes, an endless supply of mods and years worth of machinima content.

With tons of options and nearly limitless potential, Garry’s Mod enabled players to experience gameplay that was unique, endearing and addictive. It’s powerful Lua-based scripting engine also allowed for very carefully crafted maps and mini-games the likes of which had never been seen before.

Despite being nearly sixteen years old, the game still sees over 40,000 active players on a good day. Considering how enthusiastic its modding community has been thus far, it doesn’t look like Garry’s Mod will be hanging up its cape any time soon.
